Deans of six law faculties evaluated finalists of the Lawyer-for-a-Day competition

16 Nov

On 13 November the Lawyer-for-a-Day 2020, DLA Piper Hungary’s highly successful case-solving competition held for the seventh time, has concluded. The online contest welcomed over 140 law students in the first round, with 83 of them submitting detailed essay works in the second round.

Competitors joining the Lawyer-for-a-Day represented all law faculties of the country, and the top 15 law students who took part in the finals came from 6 law faculties. The five teams had to prepare a due diligence report of a family business and to present the results at a fictional investor’s simulated board meeting. During the challenge, students had to pay special attention to the business aspects and interests of the Swedish investor, as well as highlighting the potential legal risks for the client.

As part of the Lawyer-for-a-Day, teams were given the chance to experience the pressures of negotiating in real conditions, to join negotiations with the client and company executives, and to consult with five designated attorneys of DLA Piper as their respective team mentors, in order to solve the complex and challenging task with success.

In view of the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic, DLA Piper Hungary has set the health and safety of both students and participants in the competition as its primary goal. The Budapest office provided all the necessary online tools for the finalists to facilitate collaboration and communication between team members.

For the first time in the history of Lawyer-for-a-Day, deans of six Hungarian law faculties acted as members of the final jury. In addition to legal experts of the office, Judit Fazekas (Széchenyi István University), Prof. Csilla Csák (University of Miskolc), Prof. Márta Görög (University of Szeged), Prof. Sonnevend Pál (Eötvös Loránd University), Adrián Fábián (University of Pécs) and Tamás Fézer (University of Debrecen) evaluated the arguments of the teams that reached the finals.
